Amazing toaster
Love the new toaster and the little sound it makes when it's done. It's got a little led indicator to show how long is left till the toast flips up. So far it has fit all different sizes of bread I've put in there and does what it's supposed to i.e. toasts it. I love that I can pull it up without stopping the toasting to check how done the toast is.

Great results every time!
This is the second Breville Lift and Look toaster we have bought. The Lift and Look is the only toaster model we have found that toasts accurately every time. We especially like the ability to check how the toast is going without turning off the toaster.

At a glance
This 2-slice Breville toaster is a practical mid-range option for households wanting reliable everyday toasting in a compact footprint. It suits smaller kitchens and people who toast different bread types thanks to wide slots, 5 browning settings and defrost. The brushed stainless steel finish looks polished, and the crumb tray helps with upkeep. One limitation is its 2-slice capacity, which is less convenient for larger families.
What it’s great for
- Everyday Breakfasts
- Toasting Thick Bread
- Bagels and Pastries
- Small Household Use
- Compact Kitchen Setups
Where it works best
- Home Kitchen
- Apartment Kitchen
- Small Kitchen
- Office Tea Room
Who it’s for
- Singles
- Couples
- Small Households
- Busy Home Cooks
- Style-Conscious Kitchen Buyers
Things to consider
It is best suited to one or two people; larger households may prefer a 4-slice toaster for faster batch toasting.
Family suitability score
6/10 - good for singles and couples, but the 2-slice format is slower for family-sized breakfast runs.
Ease of cleaning rating
8/10 - the removable crumb tray makes regular cleanup straightforward.
Small kitchen fit
Strong - compact benchtop size and 2-slice format suit apartments and tighter kitchen spaces.
Bread type versatility
8/10 - wide slots, 5 browning settings and defrost make it flexible for standard bread, thick slices, bagels and frozen items.
Key benefits
- Wide Slots: Fits thicker slices, bagels and denser pastries more comfortably than narrow-slot toasters.
- 5 Browning Settings: Gives you 5 levels of toast colour control to better match different bread types and personal preferences.
- Defrost Function: Lets you toast bread straight from frozen without needing a separate thawing step.
- High Lift Lever: Makes it easier to remove smaller items without putting fingers close to the slots.
- LED Indicators: Provides a simple visual cue so you can track toasting progress at a glance.
- Removable Crumb Tray: Helps keep the bench cleaner and makes routine crumb disposal easier.
- Compact Size: The 20.0 cm H x 28.8 cm W x 20.4 cm D footprint fits more easily on crowded benchtops.
- Brushed Stainless Steel Finish: Adds a durable, contemporary look that pairs well with modern kitchen appliances.
Q: Is this toaster large enough for a family breakfast rush
A: No. Breville BTA720BSS toasts 2 slices at a time, so it suits singles, couples, or smaller households better than bigger morning batches. If several people need toast together, a larger-capacity toaster will be more practical.
Q: Will wide slots fit thick sourdough slices and bagels properly
A: Yes. The extra-wide slots are designed for thicker bread types such as artisan slices and bagels, not just standard sandwich bread. It is still a 2-slice toaster, so larger breakfasts may need more than one round.
Q: Can you check toast progress without cancelling the cycle
A: Yes. Breville's Lift and Look function lets you raise the toast to check colour, then keep the cycle going rather than starting again. The front LED indicators also show the toasting progress at a glance.
Q: Does it have a dedicated bagel setting or only browning control
A: This model is designed for bagels because the slots are wide, but a dedicated bagel mode is not listed. Toasting control comes from its 5 browning settings, so results are adjusted manually rather than by a separate bagel program.
Q: How much bench space does the Breville BTA720BSS need
A: Breville BTA720BSS measures 200mm high, 288mm wide and 204mm deep, so it suits compact kitchen benches without taking much width. Leave enough room above the toaster for bread to lift and for everyday access around it.
Q: Is it suitable for frozen bread straight from the freezer
A: Yes. Breville BTA720BSS includes a defrost function, so it can toast bread taken straight from the freezer without a separate thawing step. Browning may still need adjusting depending on bread thickness and how frozen the slices are.
