Best Tech For World Cup 2022
If you want to know the best TVs and digital devices for watching the World Cup, or any sport for that matter, you’ve come to the right place. Here, The Good Guys buyers Jason Tavoletti (Tech), John Milonas (Televisions) and John Wong (Mobiles) reveal their top picks for perfect streaming, World Cup snacking, and watching in comfort.
World Cup Rituals: The TV buyer
John Milonas, The Good Guys Buyer – Televisions, reveals how he’ll be watching this year…
Q. Where do you like to watch the World Cup?A. Wherever I can! Time zones aren’t always in our favour here in Australia, so sometimes I listen to it on the drive in to work, sometimes I watch it on the iPad in a hotel room. But the most fun is watching it on the big screen at home with the family while the BBQ is on. I think we have at least one Aussie match on at a reasonable time. Bring on the snags!
Q. Who will you be supporting this year?A. Australia all the way, but my wife is from Argentina so I’ll be rooting for them as well. I’m a bit bummed Greece didn’t make it this year; it would’ve been great to follow the three teams all the way through. I’ve got Greek heritage, and my kids would’ve loved to see all three of their nations play.Q. Who's your tip to win it? A. That’s the big question, isn’t it? Brazil is a hot favourite, as is France and Argentina. England’s hopes are high and it would be good if they made it through, if not win the whole thing. I think Argentina will win it though.
Q. What is your dream device for watching the World Cup?A. Bigger is best for me when it comes to TVs. I’ll be watching on the 98” Samsung QN90. It has all the benefits of a premium TV – such as next-level picture quality and detail, with deep blacks, premium colour, brightness and contrast – in a massive size. It also features a wide viewing angle, which means you get an amazing view regardless of where you’re sitting, so it’s perfect for watching sport.

Q. Which player are you most excited to watch and why?A. I am a big Lionel Messi fan, and am looking forward to him playing his best and maybe last World Cup.Q. Your must-have eats and drinks for World Cup viewing?A. Easy, I don’t drink much, so a solid supply of mineral water is my go-to. I also prefer savoury over sweet; I love a bit of popcorn. And I can’t go past a pre- or post-game BBQ.Q. Your favourite World Cup moment?A. My favourite World Cup moment was when the Socceroos made the round of 16 in Germany in 2006. Such a great moment for Australian football – and what an achievement for an “underdog” team!
World Cup Rituals: The Mobile Tech Buyer
John Wong, The Good Guys Buyer – Mobiles, reveals his World Cup prep and favourite moments…
Q. Where will you be watching the World Cup this year?
As most games will be in the early hours of the morning, I’d say most of the watching will be on my smartphone and using Bluetooth headphones so I don’t wake up anyone in the house.Q. Who will you be supporting this year?A. Australia is the only choice, right? I also wouldn’t mind seeing Ronaldo’s Portugal or Messi for Argentina finally get one as this might be their last chance.Q. Who's your tip to win it? A. France looks very strong; Mbappé is the real deal.
Q. What is your dream device for watching the World Cup?A. It has to be on a 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector to really immerse yourself in the game by having a 120” viewing screen size. The projector needs to be placed just 24.7cm from the wall to display up to 120 inches of amazing, crystal-clear picture quality. It also has built-in apps for SBS On Demand, Kayo and Optus Sport for all your World Cup 2022 content, plus Netflix, Stan and all the other streaming services.Q. Which player are you most excited to watch and why?A. I think Son Heung-min is ready to have a big tournament. Everyone loves an underdog, and South Korea will have to lean on him to get out of the group stage.
Q. Your must-have eats for World Cup viewing? You can’t go wrong with a pack of Tim Tams and a bag of chips!
Q. Favourite World Cup moment?Tim Cahill’s left foot volley against the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup – one of the best goals I’ve ever seen!
World Cup Rituals: The Tech Buyer
Jason Tavoletti, The Good Guys Buyer – Tech, reveals his favourite ways to enjoy the action at home…
Q. Where will you be watching the World Cup?A. In the comfort of my living room at home.Q. Who will you be supporting this year?A. Australia! Unfortunately, Italy didn’t make it as they were still celebrating their win at the European Cup last year.Q. Who's your tip to win it? A. With Messi to inspire them, Argentina might go all the way.Q. What is your dream device for watching the World Cup?A 100” QLED TV – QLED offers the best picture quality you can buy because of its brightness and how well the quality comes through on a big screen. Adding a soundbar creates an even better experience, bringing the crowd noise at every game right into my lounge room. The World Cup is known for its electric atmosphere, so being able to bring that into your home with a soundbar that adds dynamic depth and immersive sound is essential. TVs that are 85 inches or more are the way to go because they recreate that cinema feel and you see more of the field. It makes watching soccer as thrilling as if you were there in real life.
