Your favourite coffee served with just a press of a button. Could an Automatic Coffee Machine be right for you?

If you're unsure whether you have the time or know how to make café quality coffees at home, it's worth considering an Automatic Coffee Machine. Read on to find out more about these easy to use machines.

What is an Automatic Coffee Machine?

Automatic Coffee Machines take the hassle out of preparing café quality coffees and beverages. For a typical Manual Coffee Machine the beans have to be ground (if you want them fresh) to the right size and consistency for the brewing method, then measured and packed into the portafilter and finally locked in to the group head. Once the water reaches the right temperature, begin pouring the shot. If preparing a latte or cappuccino, the milk needs to be frothed. Once done, clean out the grounds from the head then wipe down and purge the steaming arm before making the next cup.

Preparing coffee in this way takes some getting used to. Not only is it time consuming especially for multiple cups, but it also requires some trial and error to learn all the skills to make coffee just right.

For Automatic Machines, simply stock the machine with beans and milk, then select the beverage you want and the machine takes care of the rest. Many models such as DeLonghi's use the exact amount of beans required then using up all the coffee with no spare grounds remaining to avoid more cleaning. Most Automatic Coffee Machines come with a Coffee Grinder but this isn't always the case for Manual Machines.

What is a Semi-Automatic Coffee Machine?

Semi-Automatic Machines like some of Breville's offering automatically grind, dose and tamp the coffee while texturing the milk, automating the more challenging aspects of manual coffee preparation but still allowing some control over the process. Unlike Manual Coffee Machines, a Semi Automatic Machine automatically cuts the flow of the coffee after a set amount has been poured, whereas a Manual Machine has its flow of coffee controlled entirely by the user.

Fully Automatic Coffee Machines take care of the whole process so you go from bean to cup after just pressing a button or two. Whether it’s a fully Automatic or Semi Auto Coffee Machine most come with a Milk Frother or automatic steam wand to take the guess work out of milk texturing, while the Manual Coffee Machines that do come with milk frothers require manual operation just like a real cafe barista. Fully Automatic Coffee Machines are often much larger like these Jura models and generally cost more upfront but make café quality coffee easy.

How do I clean an Automatic Coffee Machine?

Regularly cleaning an Automatic Coffee Machine ensures it keeps running efficiently and save both time and money on more intensive cleaning later. Some machines make it easy with automatic self-cleaning cycles that may require a special Coffee Machine Cleaning solution or tablet to run, so make sure to factor that in when shopping.

All Coffee Machines from Manual to Automatic models need to be descaled regularly. Minerals found in water can deposit and build up inside the steam arm, pipes and boiler. If they aren’t cleaned out regularly this can block water flow and stop the machine from working properly. Using filtered water in a machine can help reduce this build up and make descaling easier, but it's still recommended to descale the machine monthly.

If the machine has a steaming arm, wipe it down after each use with a clean cloth and purge the inside by steaming into the drip tray with many Automatic machines automatically doing this. Milk quickly becomes hardened on steam wands due to the heat leading to blockages and bacteria growth, so wlways follow the user manual for cleaning and maintenance requirements of each machine.

Which Coffee Machine is best for me?

Automatic Coffee Machines are great for café quality coffees at home. Their convenience and ease of use means they tend to be more expensive. If you have the skills and knowledge, you may prefer a Manual Coffee Machine and if you’re not fussed on using freshly ground coffee, then a Capsule Coffee Machine might just do the trick for a quick and satisfying caffeine hit. Automatic Machines tend to be larger and heavier than Manuals, although some can be more compact like the Smeg Automatic range while Pod Capsule Machines can be smaller again.

When shopping for an Automatic Machine, consider what sort of drinks and beverages needing to be made. Some machines will make espresso to a desired strength and volume, whilst others can also automatically froth the milk for a cappuccino or latte. Some machines will also provide reminders to refill the water tank or bean hopper if they're running low.

If you're worried about regular cleaning and maintenance look out for machines that will notify you when they need descaling, or choose a machines with a self-cleaning function.
