New Camera Features and Sensors on the iPhone 17 Pro

The camera system on the iPhone 17 Pro has been substantially updated, with all four lenses now rated at 48MP, a first for the iPhone Pro lineup. The rear system includes a 48MP Fusion main camera at 24mm with an f/1.78 aperture, a 48MP ultra wide at 13mm with f/2.2, a 48MP 4x telephoto at 100mm with f/2.8, and a 12MP 2x optical-quality telephoto at 48mm. Combined, these deliver a 16x optical zoom range and up to 40x digital zoom.

The front camera is a new 18MP Centre Stage sensor with f/1.9 aperture, autofocus with Focus Pixels, and support for Dual Capture mode, which records front and rear video simultaneously. The 17 Pro also includes a LiDAR scanner for depth sensing, augmented reality, and improved low-light autofocus performance. Video capabilities include 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120fps via the Fusion main lens, Macro video recording, spatial video at 1080p up to 30fps, and Apple Log 2 support for professional colour grading workflows.

Rear camera system at a glance:

  • 48MP Fusion main: 24mm, f/1.78, optical image stabilisation

  • 48MP Ultra Wide: 13mm, f/2.2

  • 48MP Fusion Telephoto: 100mm (4x), f/2.8

Processor Performance and Speed

The A19 Pro chip powers the iPhone 17 Pro, featuring a 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores, a 6-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. Apple rates the A19 Pro as delivering up to 40% better sustained performance compared to previous generations, which translates to faster app launches, smoother multitasking, and more responsive gaming. The chip also incorporates Neural Accelerators that support Apple Intelligence features including writing tools, image generation, and on-device language processing.

A cooling vapour chamber is built into the iPhone 17 Pro's aluminium unibody, helping to maintain performance under sustained loads such as extended video recording or graphics-intensive applications. This is particularly relevant for ProRes video capture and processing, where thermal management directly affects how long the device can record without throttling. The A19 Pro is confirmed as the most powerful iPhone chip Apple has released to date.

Display Brightness and Refresh Rates

The iPhone 17 Pro features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2622 x 1206 pixels at 460 pixels per inch. ProMotion technology enables an adaptive refresh rate that scales up to 120Hz for smooth scrolling and responsive touch input, while dropping to lower rates during static content to preserve battery life. Peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits for HDR content, with True Tone technology adjusting the white balance to match ambient lighting conditions.

The display uses the always-on capability introduced in recent Pro models and supports HDR content from streaming services, Apple TV+, and locally stored files. The 6.3-inch size is an incremental increase from the previous Pro generation and provides more screen area without significantly affecting the phone's portability. The iPhone 17 Pro Max steps up to a larger panel for users who prioritise screen real estate.

Display specifications:

  • 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED (2622 x 1206, 460ppi)

  • ProMotion adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz

  • Peak brightness: 3,000 nits

  • HDR with True Tone and always-on display

  • Ceramic Shield 2 front glass with 3x better scratch resistance than previous generation

Battery Efficiency and Charging Speeds on the iPhone 17 Pro

Battery life on the iPhone 17 Pro reaches up to 31 hours of local video playback and up to 28 hours of streamed video, made possible by the aluminium unibody design that creates additional physical space for a larger battery cell. The A19 Pro chip's efficiency cores also contribute to longer standby and light-use battery performance. These are the highest battery ratings Apple has published for a standard-sized Pro model.

Wired charging brings the iPhone 17 Pro to 50% in 20 minutes using a 40W adapter or higher, the cable is included in the box but the adapter is sold separately. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging can also reach 50% in 30 minutes when used with a 30W adapter or higher. The iPhone 17 Pro supports USB-C with USB3 transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, which also enables faster wired CarPlay and direct camera import to a computer.

Build Materials and Durability

The iPhone 17 Pro introduces a heat-forged aluminium unibody construction, which Apple describes as the strongest iPhone frame yet. The back of the device is protected by Ceramic Shield, rated 4x more resistant to cracks compared to the previous generation's glass back. The front features Ceramic Shield 2, which delivers 3x better scratch resistance than the previous Ceramic Shield. This dual-layer protection addresses both drop and day-to-day scratch vulnerability in a meaningful way.

The iPhone 17 Pro carries an IP68 water resistance rating, certified to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. Dynamic Island replaces the traditional notch and houses Face ID sensors alongside real-time activity notifications. The Action Button on the side provides a customisable shortcut for functions such as the camera, torch, mute, or any assigned app. For users comparing the standard and Pro builds, the iPhone 17 uses a different chassis material and does not feature the aluminium unibody construction.

FAQs

The iPhone 17 Pro is available in three storage configurations: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. At launch the 256GB model suits users who rely on cloud storage for photos and videos. The 512GB model is a practical middle ground for users who shoot a lot of ProRes video or keep large media libraries on-device. The 1TB configuration is aimed at professional content creators and users who want maximum local storage without relying on cloud services.

All three storage tiers are available across the full range of iphone 17 pro colours, though some combinations are offered as online-only. There is no expandable storage on the iPhone 17 Pro, so selecting the right capacity at purchase is important. Users who regularly record 4K Dolby Vision or ProRes footage will find that storage fills up quickly, making 512GB or 1TB the more practical choice for that use case. The iPhone 17 Pro was released in September 2025, with units available for purchase at The Good Guys both in-store and online. The 256GB models in Deep Blue and Cosmic Orange are available in stores, while select 512GB and 1TB configurations are offered as online-only. The device ships with iOS 26 and a 1-metre USB-C charge cable included in the box.

For a broader view of the iPhone 17 family including the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, the full range is listed across the iPhone section with current availability and pricing. The iPhone 17 Pro comes with a one-year manufacturer's warranty from Apple.

The iPhone 17 Pro supports both MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, reaching 50% charge in 30 minutes when paired with a 30W USB-C adapter or higher. This is a significant step up from earlier wireless charging speeds and brings the convenience of magnetic alignment together with meaningfully faster wireless top-up. Neither the MagSafe charger nor a power adapter is included in the box, so both need to be purchased separately.

Wired charging via USB-C is faster still, hitting 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher. The USB-C port also supports USB3 data transfer at up to 10Gbps, which is useful for direct import of ProRes footage to a Mac or external drive. For users who want to keep a wireless charger at their desk and a cable by the bed, both methods are genuinely fast and worth using depending on the situation.

The iPhone 17 Pro is available in three iphone 17 pro colours: Deep Blue, Cosmic Orange, and Silver. Deep Blue has a rich, saturated finish that works across the aluminium unibody with a distinctive character compared to the more neutral tones Apple typically releases. Cosmic Orange is a bold, warm colour that is a notable departure from the greys and blacks that have dominated the Pro range in past years. Silver provides a clean, neutral finish suited to users who prefer a more understated look.
