What To Look For In A Toaster

More than just great colours and different sizes, there are plenty of things that you should look out for when buying a new toaster. Here are some of our favourite features.

Capacity

Size counts when choosing a toaster. We recommend a 4 slice toaster for a busy family and a 2 slice toaster for couples or apartment living. Unless you really love a few extra slices in the morning…

Design

Here are a few tips when considering toaster designs:

  • Look for an easy-to-clean exterior. Dirt and grime can get trapped in crevices so the less tricky angles the better.

  • Sharp edges can scratch cabinetry and surfaces.

  • Stainless steel looks awesome but takes more cleaning than a simple plastic model.

  • A toaster with a glass side is an awesome idea for elderly relatives. It allows you to see inside if the toast is burning, which may help to prevent the smoke alarm going off in the kitchen.

  • A crumb tray is your best friend. Slide it in and out easily for cleaning up in seconds. A good tip is to give the toaster an occasional shake upside down and it’ll be as good as new.

Temperature Options

  • The touching temperature refers to the exterior of the toaster, which should remain cool when toasting and not exceed 60℃.

  • Bagel and crumpet settings are perfect for cooking on one side only.

  • For multi-taskers, a ‘keep warm’ function is for those who don’t always get to eat at their first try. Hello new mums.

  • A defrost setting helps you toast straight from the freezer.

  • Toasted sandwich making in a toaster. What is this sorcery? But it’s true. By using a metal basket with a handle, you can load your sanga up and toast it to perfection.

Modern Features in a Toaster

If you like your appliances with the latest bells and whistles, some toasters now feature LED lights as a progression bar or timer, WiFi connectivity and different alerts that let you know when your toast is ready.

Height Lift Carriage

If you’ve ever burnt your fingers taking hot toast or crumpets out of the toaster, you’ll realise how awesome a height-lift carriage is. It allows you to raise smaller items above the slots and saves the ends of your fingers.

Lift ‘n’ Look Feature

For the inquisitive, impatient, curious or all of the above, the Lift’n’Look feature allows you to manually raise the toast up so you can see how it’s going. It won’t even interrupt the heating cycle for you.

Digital Display

Our favourite feature is the countdown clock on the digital display that some modern toasters have. 3…2…1… toast liftoff!

‘A Bit More’ Button

‘A bit more’ button gives your toast a minute more cooking time without needing to start the toasting cycle again. Basically, it’s a shortcut to toast perfection.

How To Choose The Best Toaster For Your Modern Kitchen

You’ve created a fabulous modern kitchen, and appliances like a toaster can really finish off the look. If you’ve created a Scandi style kitchen, go for a toaster that is sleek and stylish. Your Hamptons kitchen needs a white or pale coloured toaster to match the neutral tones. Have you upgraded your appliances to stainless steel? Then a stainless steel toaster will match the look as well. The Smeg retro toaster looks perfect within an industrial kitchen, whereas a gorgeous black toaster will suit any modern kitchen with a little flair.

There are loads of toasters in the range at your local The Good Guys store and online, so you’re sure to find the one that best suits your needs.
