SUMMER MUST-HAVES

When the mercury starts rising, keep your cool and tackle the heat head-on with these too hot-to-handle products

1. Fun beats

Turn up the volume on your entertaining plans. There are plenty of options for wireless music connectivity to your smartphone or tablet for truly portable sound, including the funky UE Boom2 wireless portable Bluetooth speaker, which is waterproof — perfect for the beach or pool. Built tough to take anywhere, it has a 15-hour battery life to ensure plenty of listening time.

2. Breath of fresh air

If you’re planning on entertaining, have family or friends coming to stay, or just can’t face another hot season without adequate cooling, it’s not too late to have a new air conditioning system installed. Split-system air conditioning has an internal unit that blows cool air inside and an external unit that removes the heat created during the process, while a reverse system, such as the Fujitsu C2.5kW H3.2kW reverse cycle split system, heats and cools and is ideal for year-round use. You can also opt for portable coolers, pedestal or floor fans.

3. Cool it

When the temperature rises, you can never have enough cold drinks on hand. Enter the bar fridge — the ideal accompaniment to any occasion to help quench thirsts. The Hisense 157L bar fridge has plenty of space for all of your drinks and perishables, with an adjustable glass shelf and fruit and vegie crisper. Plus, it comes in a range of stylish colours for extra cred.

4. Grill and chill

Right now, your barbecue is bound to be your best friend. From a celebratory snag on Australia day to mouth-watering roasts, cooking outdoors is easy with the right equipment. A key factor is ensuring your barbecue has a big enough cooking surface to handle your haul. The compact Weber Baby Q is a great all-rounder — big enough for your everyday barbecue, yet you can take it with you when you go away. Accessories include meat thermometer, drip pans, trivets, hot plates, covers and patio carts.

5. Heat is on

While warm weather is ideal for line-drying your washing, it never hurts to have a back-up clothes dryer to ensure all of the moisture is completely removed from your garments. You can also partially sun-dry your clothes and then throw them in the dryer to speed up the process or quickly dry clothes and towels after a day at the beach or pool.

6. Photo opportunity

We all tend to get a bit snap happy at this time of year. From family catch-ups to holiday adventures, it’s the prime time for creating and capturing memories. A DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) is ideal for taking multiple shots and is a good step up from a point-and-shoot camera. The Nikon d5600 allows you to take vibrant pictures, full HD videos and time-lapse.

7. Big picture

Whether it’s too hot outside or you just don’t want to miss a moment of televised sporting action, now is the ideal time to invest in a big-screen TV. A larger screen with a higher resolution is ideal for lovers of sport and action movies, or those who enjoy playing fast-paced games. An OLED TV promises excellent picture quality with vibrant colours, while 4K, or UHD (ultra high definition), offers the greatest pixel resolution, similar to the cinema experience. Smart TVs have built-in internet connectivity, ensuring there’s always something to watch.

8. Chop to it

A food processor is a must in any modern kitchen — it’s the ultimate accessory for quick and easy chopping, mixing and processing. A set of sharp chef’s knives is also a must, while Lakeland has a host of handy gadgets to make light work of salads, from an apple corer to a garlic press and zester to vegetable spiraliser.

9. In the mix

When it comes to multi-tasking appliances, you can’t go past a blender. Beat the heat and put your blender to work creating delicious, refreshing cool drinks and sorbets. Simply add some ice and it’s time to chill. Ideally, choose a model with a pulse setting, for precise results. Multiple speed settings are handy so you can adjust it to suit your needs.

10. Cleaning up

On a sunny day, there are better things to be doing than washing dishes. A dishwasher can save you time, with many models offering a quick wash option. Not only is it possible to get a dishwasher at an affordable price, most use less water and energy compared with washing by hand, and are also better at cleaning dishes. Double-drawer models also allow you the option to wash a smaller load if necessary.
