How to make two-tone icing swirls

Step-by-step instructions and Wilton two-colour cupcake essentials.

Wilton Cupcake info

1

Make icing the day before the cupcakes so the colour is vibrant. Follow your recipe to make buttercream icing with a medium consistency then split the icing in half. Half will be the white part of the swirls so put that to the side, then use the Wilton Christmas Red icing colour to tint the other half red.

2

Bake and cool cupcakes. Make the cupcake batter following your recipe. Bake your cupcakes and allow them to cool completely before icing.

3

Get the icing bags ready. You’ll need three decorating bags. Fill a quarter of one of the bags with white icing, and fill a quarter of another decorating bag with red icing. Cut a hole half an inch from the pointy end of all three bags. Slightly flatten one side of each of the two bags that have icing in them. Insert the star-shaped 1M tip into the top of the empty bag, then put the other two filled icing bags inside this bag until both of their tips are at the very end, and twist the tops of the two icing bags together.

4

Ice cupcakes. Use the bag to pipe a two-coloured icing swirl onto each cupcake. Each batch of these two-tone icing bags will ice 4-5 cupcakes.
