Design-savvy twin sisters Alisa and Lysandra Fraser share their kitchen style secrets.
When it comes to winning kitchen design, twin sisters Alisa and Lysandra Fraser know their stuff. So much so that during their time on The Block, they were dubbed the “kitchen queens”.
After winning The Block Sky High in 2013, the dynamic duo was invited back for The Block Fans v Faves in 2014, when the girls again showed off their design prowess, delivering what they considered to be their best kitchen yet.
“The kitchen we designed for the Fans v Faves series of The Block was our favourite and for good reasons,” Alisa says.
“The size of the space was incredible to work with and allowed us to go bold with our design. We created a design that helped streamline the kitchen by elongating the cabinetry and kitchen bench. And we added textural variation and timber to help it integrate perfectly with the rest of the home’s interior, blending in seamlessly while offering beautiful form and function.”
Lysandra says the sisters took a big risk when it came to the design, switching the position of the kitchen from the original plans to add real edge to their loft-style apartment. But it was a move that paid off — they were the only contestants willing to think outside the square in order to achieve the best layout possible.
“Designing for a broader audience, and not a specific client made the design brief broader, and we had to consider the needs of potential buyers in terms of function, design longevity, storage, and lifestyle,” Lysandra says.
“We designed a kitchen that will stand the test of time. We worked with the space to harness every available inch, turning it into useful storage. The added bar/table and island bench were designed to cater for breakfasts, social get togethers and for buffet entertaining.”
The sisters also put a lot of thought into their appliance selection. “Kitchen appliances serve more than just the purpose of food and meal preparation; their design aesthetic adds to the overall look and feel of a space,” Alisa says.
“Choosing the right appliances is essential for both functionality and aesthetics. In our design we chose integrated appliances (microwave and coffee machine) so we could add continuation and flow to the already streamlined design of the kitchen. Clutter-free countertops are highly desirable, and the right appliances were chosen with this goal in mind.”
And the girls’ go-to appliance in the kitchen? “Literally, it is the refrigerator,” Alisa says. “It’s the most used, most visited, most-loved appliance, and we know from experience that the right fridge can have a significant impact in not only aesthetics, but also storage and food preservation.”
While the sisters have gone on to design other kitchens since their time on The Block, they say their biggest lesson learnt was the importance of the layout.
“Challenging an existing layout can be an audacious, but highly effective, move,” Lysandra says.
“Kitchen design is expensive when compared with other spaces, so it’s important to get it right, even if that means going outside the parameters of the existing layout. It’s the one investment in a home that can drive up the value more than any other room, so it’s important to ensure the design steers away from trends that are “hot” right now, and will be ageless through the choice of textures and materials that will stand the test of time.
“Creating a design that will welcome accessories and visual accents will also help in keeping the space fresh throughout the seasons."
Layout: It needs to be harmonious and cohesive with the rest of the home.
Functionality: Aesthetics are redundant in the lack of functionality. Make sure your kitchen design corresponds to your daily habits and usage routines
Longevity: Opt for a design that will age well in terms of materials but also aesthetics. A well-designed kitchen is one you will love for years to come and one that will give you the flexibility to accessorise and switch up for kitchen decor over the years.
Cabinetry profiles: Door handles and cabinetry doors are not to be dismissed. They are the finishing touches to your design.
Lifestyle: The kitchen is the heart of the home, make sure it’s aligned and caters for every element of your lifestyle.
