Enjoy the finer things in life when you start collecting and showcasing your favourite bottles.

Wine fridges are stylish and perfectly crafted to make cellaring a wine collection easy. Whether you are a practiced expert or a beginner collector, here’s what you need to know about wine fridges.

What’s the point of a wine fridge?

Wine fridges are specially designed to maintain an optimal storage environment for both immediate consumption and long-term wine storage within a temperature range unique to wine fridges only. Whether you’re a connoisseur or simply someone that can appreciate a nice bottle of wine, you may have considered collecting and aging some bottles. Many wines develop a smoother, rounder, gentler and more mature flavour profile over time, if properly stored.

A dry environment will dehydrate the cork and risk breaking the seal on a bottle of wine. Light and vibrations also negatively impact wines. Wine fridges are designed to control these factors so that your wine collection will age beautifully.

Traditionally, a wine cellar is a temperature-controlled room designed to maintain ideal conditions for long-term wine storage. Some of the latest wine cabinets are designed to mimic wine cellars.  There are ideal temperatures, humidity and other environmental factors that allow a wine to age so it can develop its flavour profile without being ruined.

Can be beer be stored in a wine fridge?

Wine fridges are designed to keep your reds and whites in optimal condition for maximum drinking enjoyment or for cellaring, that is, wine fridges allow for the right environment in which quality reds and vintage whites can develop to their full potential.

Beers are best kept in either a bar fridge or a beverage centre. Beverage centres, like some from Vintec, can store up to 100 bottles so they’re great for entertaining and keeping all types of icy cold beers on hand at temperatures as low as 2°C. Beverage centres are designed to hold more than just beer too, making them a versatile hub for various refreshments.

While white wines can be stored in beverage centres, wine fridges are purely for either reds or whites (or both) and serve a very specific purpose with their specific temperature range, some having insulated side panels, specially-treated glass doors, as well as wooden shelves that prevent vibration to maintain the integrity of your favourite bottle.

What temperature should a wine fridge be kept at?

Wine fridges (also known as a wine cabinet or wine cellar), offer a temperature range of around 6 to 18°C, so for your red wines, you’d be looking at storing these at the upper temp range and your whites the opposite for perfectly chilled crisp Riesling or sparkling wine. Cellaring requires a different temperature again, so only a wine fridge can offer that perfectly controlled environment.

While you can only store reds or whites in a single zone wine cabinet, you can store both in our dual zone Vintec wine cabinets or LG’s Instaview wine cellar to keep your whites chilled at one temperature, your Pinot Noir’s maintained at another - or cellared at a different temp so your good wines can get better with time.

At The Good Guys you’ll find capacities ranging from 30 bottles in the latest Hisense wine fridges, right through to 170 bottles in Vintec’s wine fridges. Either way, a wine fridge is perfect for maintaining a consistent temperature so your wines taste the way they should all year round.

Do wine fridges use a lot of electricity?

The running cost of your wine fridge will vary depending on the size and model you buy, as well as how many bottles of wine you are storing in it. Whilst your wine fridge will have to remain always switched on to effectively preserve the wine inside, the good news is that the running cost of a wine fridge is substantially less than other fridges.

Wine fridges are generally more energy efficient than fridges because they do not need to be anywhere near as cold. As mentioned previously, wine fridges are designed to maintain a stable temperature in the 6-18°C range for optimal storage. A standard household fridge, on the other hand, will need to maintain a temperature of around 4°C to keep food items fresh, requiring much more energy. Most fridges also have a freezer compartment which is even more energy intensive.

A larger wine fridge will use more power overall but the more bottles of wine you store the less each individual bottle costs to store.
